Joel Matip, a stalwart defender who played a crucial role in Liverpool’s success under Jurgen Klopp, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 33. The Cameroonian international’s decision comes just months after his departure from Anfield, where he spent eight remarkable years.
Matip joined Liverpool on a free transfer in 2016, leaving German side Schalke 04, the only other club he represented in his career. During his time on Merseyside, he established himself as a key figure in Klopp’s lineup, making 201 appearances and contributing to 76 clean sheets.
The center-back’s impressive tenure at Liverpool was marked by numerous triumphs, including the Premier League title in 2019/20, where he played nine times.
